First edition of all the published issues of this rare French journal for English learners, published monthly, first at Le Havre and then in Paris. Besides the article titles in French the text is almost entirely in English, with frequent bracketed interpolations in French explaining difficult or idiomatic phrases. The editor was professor of languages at the Collége du Havre and published The Seine, an historical Tour from Havre to Rouen in 1836. We can locate no other copy of The Child’s Journal save the Bibliothèque nationale copy.(see full details)
The choice of texts is broad, with a special emphasis on tales of history, travel and adventure, with some concerning natural history. Among the adventures are shipwreck and captivity narratives abridged from their original sources, quite frequently set in North America, Russia and the South Seas. They include: ‘Cinque jours de résidence dans une ile déserte, Aventures extraordinaires d’un jeune marin de quatorze ans’; ‘La Femme Indienne, ou la victime de la superstition’ [set beside in the Mississipi, from Percy’s Anecdotes]; ‘Le Prisonnier et les anthropophages’ [from The Wonderful Magazine]; Cook; ‘Voyage du Capitaine Ross au Pôle nord’; ‘Aventure d’un officier Américain’ [General Putnam]; ‘Sept Mois dans le désert’ [derived from Hearne’s Journey to the Northern Ocean]; ‘Chasse aux chevaux sauvages’ [abridged from Washington Irving’s Tour on the Prairies]; ‘Naufrage du Navire The Harpooner’; ‘Balboa et la Mer Pacifique’ and ‘Le Voyageur et le Cayman’ and excets from Walter Scott, Joseph Flood, Carver’s History of Boston and Chamber’s Edinburgh Journal.More details Price: £3,000.00

A satire on contemporary student life, addressing the traditional pursuits of the young denizens of the rue Saint Jacques — drinking, smoking, gaming, dancing and womanizing.
This is one of the many such little Physiologies illustrative of ‘the craze that swept Paris in the early 1840s for a series of small illustrated volumes marketed under the general title of physiologies [looking back, perhaps, to Brillat-Savarin’s bestselling Physiologie du goût (1826) and Balzac’s Physiologie du marriage (1830)]. Some 120 different physiologies were issued by various Parisian publishers between 1840 and 1842 (ranging alphabetically from the Physiologie de l’amant to the Physiologie du voyageur), and it is estimated that approximately half a million copies of these pocket-sized books were printed during the same two-year span’ (Sieburth, p. 163).
Designed for mass consumption, these satirical guides to particular social types were based on ‘the witty interaction of image and text, drawing and caption, seeing and reading … Byproducts of the recent technological advances in printing and paper manufacturing which had made illustrated books more commercially feasible and analogous to the various dioramas and panoramas which enjoyed a considerable popularity during the period, these illustrated anthologies of urban sites and mores catered to the public’s desire to see its social space as a stage or gallery whose intelligibility was guaranteed both by its visibility as image and its legibility as text …
‘Quickly produced and marketed, consumed and discarded, … the physiologies (like the sensational tabloids or canards hawked on Paris streetcorners of the period) are early instances of the cheap, throwaway “instant book” whose appeal lies in its very topicality and ephemerality’ (op. cit., pp. 165–7). The Supernatural Philosopher is a reissue of The History of the Life and Adventures of Mr. Duncan Campbell (1720) with the addition of ‘Verses to Mr. Campbell. On the History of his Life and Adventures’ and ‘A remarkable passage of an apparition. 1665’.(see full details)
The author evidently lodged for a while in the same London house as the Scots-born soothsayer Duncan Campbell (d. 1730), who was a well-known figure in the city. Deaf and mute, he was probably educated at Glasgow using the finger system devised by John Wallis in the seventeenth century. The History of the Life was persistently attributed until relatively recently to Defoe even though it was reissued here under Bond’s name.More details Price: £800.00

A complete manuscript course of stenography, or shorthand ― the art of writing ‘aussi vite que la parole’, finely written with numerous thumbnail drawings. Divided into four parts (introduction, pronunciation, punctuation and an atlas) with an errata, a table of contents and two sheets of stenographic examples or exercises.(see full details)
The ‘Atlas’ supplies description of the stenographic signs in 13 charts, with 51 finely drawn vignettes giving the figurative equivalent of the stenographic signs and their pronunciation. Among them we find the links of a chain for representing an open ‘a’ (as in anneaux), a radiating halo for an ‘o’ (as in oréole), a drunkard for the ‘i’ (ivrogne), a gallows for the ‘p’ (potence), a cat for the ‘ch’ (chat), and so on, including a funnel, lyre, clock, umbrella, falls, arrow and gondola, the morphology of the signs given an ideogrammatic cue as a mnemonic. The whole represents a complete teaching system aimed at the aspiring stenographer.More details Price: £4,000.00

A reissue of the rare Logic, Ontology, and the Art of Poetry (London, Carnan & Newbery, 1776; Roscoe J67), with a cancel title-page and conjugate plate. With a 7-page Newbery catalogue at the end. ‘The imprint is false; probably printed at York for Wilson, Spence and Mawman’ (ESTC).
An intriguing reissue of the sheets of a collective volume of John Newbery’s Circle of the Sciences (for which he wrote the poetry analysis), first published more than twenty years earlier, in 1776. The works themselves originally appeared separately, in 1748 and 1746 respectively, and in the 1776 collected volume are described as ‘considerably enlarged, and greatly improved’. How the sheets then got from Newbery to ‘A. Millar’ (i.e. Wilson?) et al. is a mystery.
This issue is very rare. ESTC records only the British Library and Yale copies; WorldCat adds two more, at Wagner College and Wyoming. Alston VII, 274; not in Roscoe.(see full details)More details Price: £650.00
