[VULSON DE LA COLOMBIÈRE, Marc]. ~ Traité des songes et des visions nocturnes [drophead title]. [Caen: Calopin c. 1800].
12mo (140 × 84 mm), pp. 12. Stitched in contemporary pale blue wrappers. Slightly soiled and creased but a good copy.
A popular pocket dream dictionary abridged from Vulson de la Colombière’s influential Le Palais des curieux first published in 1660 and widely disseminated in popular form. The foot of the final page includes a series of numbers offered as the most likely to be drawn in the national lottery. Many of the dream interpretations are familiar (loosing teeth signfiying death, a rainbow in the East, good fortune, white horse, joy and so on) while other motifs are more bizarre (seeing one intestines eaten by someone else, seeing harpies flying in the air, kissing a dead person, for example). René Helot, La Bibliothèque bleue en Normandie (1928). 12
