Publisher’s blindstamped black morocco, panelled spine, engraved gilt openwork cornerpieces and clasp (the latter stamped ‘Bagster’), all edges gilt with gauffreing and painted branch and scroll motifs with the texts ‘Watch and Pray’, ‘Search the Scriptures’ and ‘Pray Always’ in black letter script. Joints and spine rubbed, small portion of wear to lettering piece, resulting in a small hole (affecting the lettering), one joint of clasp broken, but still secure. Several pressed plants and ferns, including a four-leaf cover) loosely inserted, contemporary ownership inscription, probably (though not certainly) ‘Georgiana Glasford, August 1854’.
An elaborate Victorian decorated binding by Bagster, with accomplished fore-edge decoration in the gothic style.
