4to (250 × 205 mm). 13 photographs mounted on thick card with printed text of the stanzas of the poem, 4 pp. text insert, plus and additional 1 p. on another inserted bifolium prospectus/advert. Light spotting to a few mounts and very light duststaining towards margins. Loose as issued in original green cloth portfolio. Slightly rubbed, with spine ends a little rolled, paper lining cracked and minimally frayed at folds of flaps, wants ties. Early ownership inscription to front pastedown. A good copy.
First edition. The inserted text records the acceptance of Brown’s photographs by both Tennyson himself (’a most pleasant illustration of my Poem’) and Queen Victoria, while the advert leaf reproduces and article from the Newcastle Daily Chronicle, December 16th, 1879 describing their publication as ‘a work which ought to take the lead amongst books designed for Christmas Presents’.
