Small 4to (210 × 160 mm), pp. [8], 115, [1], plus 4 colour printed plates (including frontispiece and additional title, numerous wood engraved illustrations. Original publisher’s green cloth, decoratively gilt with gilt edges. Early engraved bookplate (Thomas Pigg, Newcastle). Spine just rolled at head and foot. An excellent copy.

First edition. Shirley Hibberd was among the most prolific of horticultural writers of the nineteenth century and a pioneering environmentalist. He deplored the despoliation of wild flowers and proposed various practical methods of gardening in harmony with the natural world.
