4to (192 × 145 mm), pp. , 100. First text leaf with elaborate borders printed in colour with gold, all others with gold ruling and decorations. Some slight separation at gutters, but secure. Original papier mâché binding with terracotta oval reliefs inset, over wooden boards, red endpapers, original embossed leather spine. Corners chipped with some loss.
Second edition (the first 1851). Describing the first edition McLean wrote: ’The single colour plate in Sentiments and Similes is in fact very fine, and is superior in technical quality to the chromolithography of Noel Humphreys’ early books’.
