DICKENS, Charles. ~ The Mystery of Edwin Drood. London: [William Clowes and Sons for] Chapman and Hall, 1870.
8vo (215 × 130 mm), pp. viii, , 190, plus engraved portrait by J.H. Baker, additional title and 12 wood engraved plates by Samuel Luke Fildes. Occasional marginal foxing, but generally very clean. Contemporary half calf. Slightly rubbed. A very good copy.
First edition of Dickens’s final novel, left unfinished at his death, a murder mystery of love, jealousy, opium, and a distinctly unsavoury choirmaster. Set in ‘Cloisterham’, a thinly disguised version of Dickens’s beloved Rochester. Probably bound from the parts, discarding the wrappers and adverts. cf. Smith, Charles Dickens, I, 16.
