(BEAUMONT DU REPAIRE, Christophe de, Archbishop of Paris). ~ Lettre pastorale, de monseigneur l'archevêque de Paris, aux fideles de son diocèse. Paris: C. F. Simon, 1758.
4to (270 × 200 mm), pp. 8. Woodcut arms and ornaments, author’s facsimile signature at end. Stitched in contemporary green and gilt floral wrappers.
First edition, in a fine contemporary gilt paper wrapper. Writing from exile from his Paris diocese imposed by the King, the Archbishop promises in this pastoral letter to redouble his efforts to defend the faith against ‘des attaques de la Philosophie Anti-Chrétienne du siècle’. Christophe de Beaumont was a powerful opponent of Jansenism and of Enlightenment philosophy, which he saw as enemies of the church; he opposed the Encyclopèdie project, wrote against Rousseau and refused communion to Madame de Pompadour. Worldcat: BL and Maynooth (Ireland) only outside France.
