BENNETT, Agnes Maria. Cornélie WOUTERS, baronne de Vasse, translator. ~ Les Imprudences de la jeunesse, par l’auteur de Cécilia; traduit de l’Anglois, Par Madame la Baronne de Vasse. Maastricht: J.P. Roux & Compagnie, 1788.
4 vols bound in one, 12mo (170 × 90 mm), pp. [iv], 119, ; [iv], 133, ; 199, ; [iv], 147, , complete with half-titles. Slightly later quarter calf, spine with black morocco labels (mislettered ‘Vols 1-2-3’). A very good copy. From the books of the late Martin Stone (1946-2016).
Juvenile Indiscretions (1786) first appeared in French in 1788, probably in the ‘Londres’ [Paris] edition listed by Rochedieu. This Maastricht edition of the same year was probably very near contemporary. Both editions are of the translation by Cornélie Wouters, baronne de Vasse and both are incorrectly (or dishonestly) attributed to Fanny Burney. All Mrs Bennett’s novels appear to have been equally popular on the continent. cf. Rochedieu 21 (’Londres’ edition).
