MÉRIMÉE, Prosper. José de ZAMORA, illustrator. ~ Carmen. Paris: [Aurrault for] Office Française du Livre, 1943.
Large 8vo (258 × 180 mm), pp. 146, , plus an original watercolour, including 13 colour plates, the last plate in 6 states. Original red half morocco, gilt, with elaborate black spine label, red and gold endpapers, slipcase. Fine. From the books of the late Martin Stone (1946-2016).
FIRST EDITION THUS, including an original signed watercolour. Number 7 of 20 on Shanghaï spécial (total edition 1070). Spanish-born artist Zamora worked in Paris during the twenties, supplying designs for both the Moulin Rouge and Folies Bergères. His style was clearly inspired by Georges Barbier and his aptitude for fashion drawing is much in evidence in the illustrations here, which render the fluttering eyelashes of Carmen rather convincingly.
