FIRST EDITION. One of several privately printed single sheet poems by Townley. This one is addressed to Scott as leader of the civil defence corps (‘Civil Corps’) recruited from the legal profession during the invasion scare of 1799. James Townley (1746–1817), a succesful lawyer and proctor in the society of Doctors’ Commons married Mary Gosling (1753–1839)’ an accomplished architect responsible for several important buildings in Ramsgate including their own Townley House.
