First edition. Jane West (1758-1852) was a prolific novelist, poet and playwright, and her best novels (e.g her first : A Gossip's Story, 1796) anticipate themes explored by Jane Austen. Poems and Plays were published in 4 volumes (the first two in 1799; the second two in 1805) but complete sets are rare. This uniformly bound set contains the first three volumes. Jackson, pp. 237 & 290; Jackson, Women, p. 365.
