SCOTT, John. ~ Elegy, written at Amwell, in Hertfordshire, MDCCLXIX. London: Printed by Dryden Leach, for the Author. 1769.
4to (245 × 192 mm), pp. 9, ; browned; disbound; loose in old stiff paper wrapper.
First edition, privately printed, of Scott’s heart-breaking elegy on the death in childbirth of his wife of less than a year, Sarah Frogley, daughter of his poetic mentor, the Amwell bricklayer, Charles Frogley.
ESTC notes 3 distinct issues dated 1769. Ours has the date of composition on the title ‘MDCCLXIX’, while the other two give ‘MDCCLXVIII’ and one has an additional footnote on p. 8. Since the change to the earleir date appears to be a correction, our issue is probably the first. Rare: ESTC: BL, Harvard and Cincinnati (other issues at Cambridge, BL, Yale and Bodley).
