TOWNSHEND, Thomas. ~ Poems. By Thomas Townshend Esq. of Gray’s Inn. London: Printed by T. Bensley, for E. and S. Harding... 1796.
8vo (175 × 100 mm), pp. vii, , 112, plus one engraved plate, 14 engraved headpieces and 14 tailpieces, all after Thomas Stothard; contemporary tree calf, gilt, red morocco label; rubbed, upper joint weak, but a very good copy.
First edition to include the sequence of charming vignettes after Stothard. An unillustrated edition had appeared at Dublin in 1791. The first section is of ‘Elfin Eclogues’, featuring characters from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, with the remainder of the volume containing Odes on various subjects, including: ‘Music’, ‘Morning’, ‘Evening’, ‘the Glow-Worm’, ‘Love’ and ‘Youth’.
This is apparently antiquary and bibliographer Thomas Park’s (1758/9–1834) copy, containing his neat pencil notes, but without his commonly-found monogram. Jackson, p. 211.
