First complete edition, this copy in bindings suggestive of presentation copies. The first volume is dedicated to Joseph Banks, the second volume is a reissue of Letters to Soame Jenyns (Oxford, 1768) with an additional general title-page.
Shepherd (1732?-1809) was both a poet and theologian. The poems collected here composed throughout his career, but a good number are youthful productions from his time at Corpus Christi, Oxford. The first volume concludes with an essay on education addressed to William Jones. The dates of publication altered in manuscript. Jackson, p. 46 [1776 edition].
