ROGERS, Rev. Samuel. ~ Poems on Several Occasions. By the Revd. Samuel Rogers, Rector of Chellington, in Bedfordshire. Vol. I. [all published]. London: Printed by Dryden Leach, for R. and J. Dodsley... 1764.
8vo (205 × 120 mm), pp. xxxii, 294, , complete with list of subscribers and final advert leaf; quite spotted and stained with some consequent fragility especially towards the end; recently rebound in half calf; early ownership inscriptions of William Hold and his letterpress inkstamp ‘W Hold his Book’. A fair copy only.
First edition of a very scarce verse collection, containing 130 miscellaneous pieces, some composed as school exercises and others, one assumes, in the course of Rogers’s life as a country parson. The reviewers were generally kind to his productions. The extensive subscribers’ list is predominantly local to Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire but also includes Robert Lloyd and Charles Churchill. ESTC lists no copy in America.
