8vo (197 × 122 mm), pp. [8], 162, [2]; without the preliminary leaf ‘Entered at Stationer’s Hall’, but complete with the subscribers’ list (one name crossed out) and final advertisement leaf; original thin marbled boards, rubbed, corners worn, front free endpaper removed.

ESTC distinguishes two editions: one ‘Printed by and for the Author’ ([1790?], pp. 162, [2]; Bodley and Wisconsin only), the other ‘Printed by G. Norton, for the Author’ ([1791?], pp. [12], 3–162, [2]; BL, NLS, Bodley, Essex, Illinois, Yale, Otago).

Quaker poet May ‘died at Ampthill, in Bedfordshire, the 19th of 4th month, 1805’ (Smith). This is his last published work. Jackson, p. 169; not in Johnson; Smith, Catalogue of Friends’ Books II, 169.
