PARK, Thomas. ~ Sonnets, and other small Poems... London: Printed for G. Sael... 1797.
Small 8vo (161 × 100 mm), pp. , vi, , 120; engraved illustrated title-page and 5 plates (a little offset) by Medland; a few spots and light stain in the upper margin of the title; recent boards.
First edition of the bibliographer’s first book, printed by subscription (many members of the peerage) and with a dedicatory sonnet to Anna Seward, who had ‘corrected’ some of his early verse. ‘His Sonnets and other Small Poems (1797) pay graceful tributes to Cowper and Seward, depict scenes in Kent, Sussex, and Hertford, and show a devotion to the English poets. From this date Park abandoned his engraving and turned entirely to literature and the study of antiquities. For about ten years before this date he had been a collector, especially of English poetry and of the portraits of poets, and his possessions, though few in number, soon became famous’ (Oxford DNB). Jackson, p. 222.
