[PANTING, Stephen]. ~ Four Elegies. I. Morning. II. Noon. III. Evening. IV. Night... London: Printed for W. Bristow... 1761.
4to (249 × 208 mm), pp. 23, ; recent marbled wrappers.
First edition of these scarce imitations of Gray. ‘From the name and date subscribed to the Dedication of these Elegies (to Brooke Forrester, Esq;) we find that they are the production of Mr. Stephen Panting, of Wellington, in Shropshire; a name we do not remember to have met with before, in our poetical walks: but hope we may, not unfrequently, meet with it again’ (Monthly Review). It appears, sadly, not to have been: this is Panting’s only work listed in ESTC. Northup, Gray, 878 (second edition only, 1763); ESTC locates 13 copies, of which 6 in the US (Folger, Harvard, Huntington, UCLA, Chicago, Yale).
