MERRICK, James. ~ The Psalms, translated or paraphrased in English Verse... Reading, Printed by J. Carnan and Co.: and sold by Mr. Newbery... and Mr. Dodsley in... London; Mr. Fletcher and Mr. Prince in Oxford; and at the Printing-Office in Reading. 1765.
4to (268 × 208 mm), pp. ix, , 376, ; a very good copy in contemporary mottled calf, joints cracked but firm.
First edition, a subscriber’s copy: with the engraved armorial bookplate of Sir William Ashhurst (1725–1807)—the judge famously attacked by Bentham in Truth versus Ashhurst (written 1792, but not published until 1823)—together with a printed note to subscribers ‘not to bind the Volume till October next, lest the opposite pages should, from the freshness of the Ink, deface each other’ with errata below (bound in here after the title). Loosely inserted is a printed receipt for Sir Willliam’s having bought a copy of Stephen Street’s version of the Psalms, too (A new literal Version of the Book of Psalms, 1790), signed by Street.
Other subscribers to Merrick’s Psalms included Samuel Johnson, and Henry and Mrs Thrale. Roscoe A351 (1); Eddy & Fleeman, ‘A Preliminary Handlist of Books to which Dr. Samuel Johnson subscribed’, Studies in Bibliography 46 (1993), 7.
