Scarce first edition, dedicated to Earl Fitzwilliam, the politician, the year he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of the West Riding of Yorkshire. Many in the long list of subscribers are inhabitants of Doncaster: grocers, surgeons, chemists, a hatter, a painter, a veterinarian, a wine merchant, etc. The collection comprises verse on ‘Serious Subjects’ (‘The Lapse of Time’, ‘On Death’, ‘Human Liberty described’), ‘Stories, Fables and Songs’, ‘Love and its Consequences’, and ‘Translations and Imitations’, from Dion, Juvenal, Horace, and Gessner.
