8vo (196 × 117 mm), pp. xxxi, [3], 223, [1]; complete with half-title, engraved title-page by Wilson, printed on thick paper; uncut in the original marbled boards, worn, old paper spine (partially defective), ms label, free endpapers torn away, hinges cracked but firm; old ink inscription (smudged) to half-title.

Scarce first edition, dedicated to Earl Fitzwilliam, the politician, the year he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of the West Riding of Yorkshire. Many in the long list of subscribers are inhabitants of Doncaster: grocers, surgeons, chemists, a hatter, a painter, a veterinarian, a wine merchant, etc. The collection comprises verse on ‘Serious Subjects’ (‘The Lapse of Time’, ‘On Death’, ‘Human Liberty described’), ‘Stories, Fables and Songs’, ‘Love and its Consequences’, and ‘Translations and Imitations’, from Dion, Juvenal, Horace, and Gessner.
