[JERNINGHAM, Edward]. ~ The Nun: an Elegy. By the Author of the Magdalens. London: Printed for R. and J. Dodsley... 1764.
4to (263 × 208 mm), pp. 11, ; two ms ink corrections to p. 10; a little chipped and waterstained at extremities; disbound, leaves loose.
First edition, dedicated to the Earl of Chesterfield. ‘To all those who have feeling hearts the subject is interesting, and to all those who have a taste for poetical beauty, the manner of treating it will appear excellent... The scene is supposed to lay in a convent, where a nun, who has already taken the veil, addresses another who is just entering into the same state. She describes, in a most pathetic manner, her own unhappy situation, and the cruelty of parents in forcing their children to take this irretrievable step; many of the lines are finely turned, and in the true spirit of poetry...’ (Critical Review).
