First edition. ‘The Duellist (January) treats of the duel with Martin and other apparent attempts by the administration to have Wilkes assassinated. It is Churchill’s last work in octosyllabics: all his later published satires are in heroic couplets. He earned altogether £450 from The Author and The Duellist, so, with a new publication almost every month, he must have been an unusually wealthy professional poet’ (Oxford DNB). Rothschild 623.
