2 vols., 8vo (227 x 154 mm.) pp. xvi, 543; xv, 643. Brown cloth, gilt, brown endpapers. Light soiling, head and tail of spine slightly bumped with one short tear. Upper hinge of vol. 1 split (cords intact), lower hinges loose. Mild sunning to extremities throughout with light spotting to preliminary leaves.

First edition. Redgrave was an important figure in the Victorian art-world, both as a painted and journalist. “Redgrave published various texts on art and design, and also wrote with his brother Samuel a valuable history of British art which remains a standard authority, A Century of Painters of the English School (1866), in which he expressed national pride in the development of an English school of art” (Oxford DNB).
