YONGE, Charlotte. ~ The Chaplet of Pearls; or, The White and Black Ribaumont. By the author of “The Heir of Redclyffe” In two volumes. London: Macmillan and Co., 1868.
2 vols., 8vo, pp. xi, [i], 317, ; [viii], 284, including half-titles to both volumes and adverts to the first (as called for). Original publisher’s green cloth gilt. Spines slightly bumped at extremities, 2 very small splits to cloth of upper joint of vol. 1, one corner with slight creasing of cloth, inner hinge of vol. 1 cracked but firm. Early ownership inscriptions (dated July 1869) to both half-titles, bookplates removed. A good copy.
First edition of Yonge’s historical novel set in sixteenth-century France at a time when the persecution of the Huguenots was at its height. It famously opens with a ‘baby-marriage’ to secure an alliance between families.
