MALCOLM, John. Sketch of the political history of India from the introduction of Mr. Pitt’s bill, A.D. 1784, to the present date... London: James Moyes for William Miller, 1811.
8vo (235 × 142 mm.), pp. viii, [ii], 549, [1]. Contemporary sprinkled calf, flat spine ruled in gilt, black morocco label. Upper joint cracked but secure, lower joint starting. Bookplate of William Drummond. A very good copy.
First edition, large paper copy. A second edition appeared later the same year and the work was expanded and re-issued as The Political History of India in 1826. The first edition is very scarce. Malcolm was one of the most distinguished administrators and diplomats to serve with the East India Company and the rising Indian empire. “He was the ideologue par excellence of British India … His insight, his imagination, his willingness to think outside accepted patterns, and, above all, his capacity to bring in a range of considerations far beyond that of which others were capable, all mark him out as a man of real intellectual genius” (Yapp, cited in Oxford DNB).
