First edition, presentation copy. “Appointed an assistant commissioner by the royal commission on the poor laws in July 1832 to conduct local investigations into the working of the poor law, Tufnell visited Edinburgh to obtain Thomas Chalmers's views on poor relief. In the following year he was a member of the royal commission on children's employment in factories. He published in 1834 Character, Objects, and Effects of Trades Unions, which restated many of the contemporary objections to trade unions” (Oxford DNB).
