(DEVOTION). [A heart-shaped ‘prayer cushion’. Northern France or Flanders, c. 1880-1900.]
c. 95 × 60 mm. Green velvet, gold braid, white glass beads, enclosing manuscript on folded and cut paper with decoupage decoration. Needlework ‘hinge’ at head broken, but the two halves joined by beaded thread.
A lovely manifestation of personal devotion, presumably made by a woman. The two halves of the velvet heart open to reveal two folding fan-shaped sheets of paper, each segment with a short prayer or meditation in neat calligraphic manuscript (‘Jésus doux et humble de coeur, rends mon coeur semblable au vôtre’; ‘Doux Jésus ne soyez pas mon juge mais mon sauveur’ etc). The amulet-like object fits neatly into the palm of the hand.
