ANTHONY, Saint. [Devotional image.] Bruges, c. 1667 with later addition.
Single sheet (160 × 100 mm), a composite image including engraved figure with text, cut and laid to a hand-painted ground with silk cloth, some colour highlighted with gold and ground mica, black and gilt border. Early or original glazed wooden frame.
The basis of this finely-executed image is an engraved devotional image of St Anthony the Great, founder of Christian monasticism, dated 1667 and incorporating his traditional attributes of a bell, a T-shaped cross and a pig. The image has been cut with exceptional care to leave a central ‘window’ coinciding with the saint’s habit, which has been supplied with inlaid silk fabric. The image is highlighted with gold, colours and glittering ground mica. The artefact was probably put together in the later eighteenth- or even early nineteenth century, using an earlier print, as is common for these devotional pieces.
