(BOTANY). An album containing 58 watercolours of useful and medicinal plants. [?Alsace, 1850-1880.]
8vo (184 × 110 mm), ff. 85, with 58 leaves bearing images. Captions in manuscript. Contemporary red and black paper covered boards, spine lettered ‘Plantes’ in gilt. Joints slightly chipped, but very attractive.
The collection includes tea, coffee, cacao, sugar, spices (aniseed, vanilla, asa foetida, pepper, tamarind and ginger), bananas, dye-plants (indigo and madder), woods (mahogany and cork) and medicinal plants (quinquina, ginseng and nux vomica). There are also 24 different edible and poisonous fungi (truffles, morels, inkcaps and agarics) on 15 leaves. Captions are given throughout in both German and French (perhaps suggesting the geographical origin of the manuscript) and often also in Latin.
