‘CHAMBLEY, Edmond sire de’ [pseudonym of Edmond Haraucourt.] ‘VAN MAELE, Martin’ pseudonym of Maurice François Alfred Martin. Suite complète de 12 eaux-fortes inspirées de la “Légende des sexes.”  [n.p., n.d. but Paris c.  1904.]
Large 8vo (236 × 150 mm), 12 etchings (plate size 130 × 84 mm) loose in the original blue paper covered portfolio with printed label to upper cover. Lightly browned, loose tissue guards quite creased, slight tears (without loss) to spine.
Van Maele’s sinister eroticism, in the mould of Félicien Rops, was much in demand in turn-of-the-century Paris especially from clandestine publisher Charles Carrington for whom the artist illustrated many erotic works. This suite for La Légende des sexes is habitually attributed to Carrington but is more likely to have been published by Chevrel (according to Peter Mendes). It was re-issued with the poem in the 1920s, but our portfolio is their first appearance. The blue portfolio case is rare since a good number copies of the plates came to be bound by collectors with the 1883 first edition of the poem.
