‘CHAMBLEY, Edmond sire de’ [pseudonym of Edmond Haraucourt.] La légende des sexes poëmes hystériques. ‘Imprimé a Bruxelles pour l’auteur’ [but printed in Nevers], [1883].
8vo (227 × 145 mm), pp. 147, [5]. Uncut in original printed wrappers, the upper cover of which is printed in red and black. Light browning to wrappers and to title page (from old glassine wrapper), spine slightly torn at head and foot, with slight loss at foot. Author’s inscription and limitation to p. [2]. A very good, unsophisticated copy.
First edition, one of 220 copies, inscribed by the author (in 1884). La Légende des sexes, a highly eroticized parody of Hugo’s Légende des siècles, is one of the decadent classics of 1880s Paris. The young Edmond Haraucourt was part of the Chat noir circle, and it was this book, published clandestinely and sold covertly by the author and his friends, which brought him both celebrity and notoriety. He went on to write extensively, combining literature with various curatorial posts, but he never gained entry to the Académie française, a failure which he attributed to the scandal surrounding La Légende des Sexes.
