First edition of this standard scholarly history of the playing card. Chatto was an expert on the art of wood engraving and brings a connoisseur’s eye to the development of graphic styles and of printing methods. He suggests a likely origin for playing cards in the traditional games of Hindustan, and traces their development in the west through the Middle Ages and Renaissance to his own time.
