8vo (175 × 115 mm), pp. xvi, 139, [1]. Original publishers’ green cloth, upper cover and spine decoratively lettered in gilt. Small tear to head of spine without loss. Early bookplate (William Packe), later inscription of F. William Cock, F.S.A. Some pencil annotation. A good copy.
First edition of this popular guide to the rich Victorian botany of the area now encircled by the M 25 motorway. ‘Cooper was chiefly instrumental in the founding of the Botanical Society of London’ (ODNB). Remarkably, he was only 20 when he published Flora metropolitana, and he died at the age of 25.
