PALISSOT DE MONTENOY, Charles.
PALISSOT DE MONTENOY, Charles.  La Dunciade, ou la guerre des sots; Poëme.   ‘Chelsea’ [but probably Netherlands,]  1764.
12mo (135 × 80 mm), pp. 108. Woodcut ornament to title. Light browning. Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments, red morocco label. Minor expert repair to joints. Early woodcut and letterpress bookplate “M. Heurtier Commis Principal du Bureau de la Chancellerie” and later small lable “G. Lenfant”. A very good copy.
Palissot was one of the most potent of the anti-philosophes, lampooning Diderot and Rousseau in his popular play Les philosophes, first performed in 1755. In La Dunciade, in the vein of Pope, Palissot continued his attacks in poetic form, making no attempt to disguise the subjects of his satire, who are named in both text and footnotes.

Several editions appeared in 1764, all with a false ‘Chelsea’ imprint. Cioranescu lists two (pp. 76 and 108 respectively) while ESTC distinguishes four. All are scarce.
Cioranescu 48800 (the second of the two issues listed); ESTC locates copies of our issue at BL, Cambridge, Harvard and Göttingen only.
