First British edition. Dr Jejyll and Mr Hyde was published both in cloth, at one shilling and sixpence, and paper wrappers, at one shilling. Publication was originally intended to be in December 1885 and the date on the front cover here is printed as 1885 but the last number is altered (as always) to ‘6’ in manuscript. The book was held over to 9 January 1886 to avoind competing with the large number of Christmas books published that year. According to publishers’ records, the New York edition was published by Charles Scribner’s Sons on 5 January 1886, thus just preceding this as the first edition.

The inscription is of Richard Garnett, the British librarian, poet and editor.
