ROUT AT THE BATTLE OF MINDEN
The Hague: Pierre de Hondt,   1759.
12mo (164 × 87 mm.), pp. 143, [1]. Contemporary continental paper wrappers, later library label at foot of spine with trace of a second label. Slight chipping to extremities, closed tear to joint of upper wrapper, sunned on spine. Library stamp to title, partly obscuring publisher and date. A very pretty copy.
One of several editions of 1759, professedly “suivant la copie de Londres” issued in both English and French; other editions rapidly appeared in Amsterdam, Paris, and The Hague. The Battle of Minden was an important victory for British, Hanoverian, Hessian and Prussian troops against the French and Saxons during the Seven Years War. The title appears to have been first published by order of the British government, who presumably seized upon the letters, which number French casualties and deaths at 11,000, as an important propaganda tool.
