4 vols. in 2, 12mo (138 × 85 mm.), pp. [3]-241, [1] (index); [3]-248, [2] (index); [3]-214, [2] (table); [3]-261, [1] (index), with frontispiece plate to each volume, each volume bound without pp. 1-2. Volume 1 torn across top edge of pp. 123-4 with slight loss. Contemporary mottled calf, with red and brown labels, floral gilt tooling to panels. Small wormhole to spine of each volume, very slightly rubbed. Armorial and illustrated bookplates. An excellent copy.

Third edition in French. This popular work is considered the first imitation of Henry Fielding's Tom Jones (1749) and it is most likely this connection that led to speculation that Sarah Fielding, his novelist sister, was the anonymous author. The title was first published as The history of Charlotte Summers, the fortunate parish girl twice in 1750, before being translated into French for publication in 1751, with a second edition in French in 1752.
