First edition, with a second edition appearing in the same year. Raguenet, a highly cultured and scholarly French priest, wrote this history of Cromwell following the publication of his first work, the highly popular Histoire. His history of Cromwell has been highly acclaimed by modern historians; writing on the "prevailing sobriety of the seventeenth-century historiography of the war", Royce MacGillivray notes: "Remarkably rich in variety though it was, it never produced any parallel to the fantastic history of the war published on the continent in the lives of Cromwell by François Raguenet or by Gregorio Leti who plagiarized Raguenet." (Restoration Historian and the Civil War, 1974).
