BENTHAM, Jeremy.
8vo (206 × 125 mm.), pp. [viii], 293, [3] erratum (pp. 34 mis-paginated). Somewhat foxed, edge of pp. 107/8 ragged, occasional pencil annotations to margins. Later green half morocco, raised bands, gilt lettering direct to panels, marbled boards, sprinkled edges. Slightly rubbed. A good copy.
Second French edition. One of Bentham's earliest and most influential publications, the title was first published as Defence of Usury in 1787. Bentham's critique of Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations advocates free trade in money and was written in response to reports that the British government was planning to place further restrictions on interest rates.
