First French edition. In 1817 Bentham published Part II of Chrestomathia, his important work on education, an appendix of which contained an Essay on nomenclature and classification. Over the following five years the essay was translated into French by his young nephew George Bentham, who was profoundly influenced by his uncle's views on the logic of nomenclature, tabulation and arrangement throughout his subsequent illustrious career as a botanist.
