Partly uncut in slightly later marbled paper covered boards, with black morocco label, gilt flower and year of publication lettered direct. A little rubbed, with paper split at top edge of spine (joint intact), some loss to label and headcap. A very good copy with broad margins.
First edition, probably printed in Paris. Written by French playwright, journalist and critic Bastide, this epistolary piece takes the form of a long and anguished love-letter, with the reader left waiting for the response of the young lady until the final tantalising pages. The finely-engraved (unsigned) frontispiece is a charming image of a lady in a garden before a bush laden with flower buds in the form of human faces.
