DICKENS, Charles. A Tale of Two Cities. With illustrations by H.K.Browne. London: Chapman and Hall, 1859.
8vo (138 × 223 mm.), pp. viii, [2], 254. 16 engraved plates, including frontispiece and engraved title-page. Armorial bookplate. Original red morocco cloth, decorated in blind, lettered and decorated in gilt on spine. Slight rubbing to head and foot of spine, with minor expert repair to head, and extremities, gilt to spine slightly dulled, but not faded. A very good copy, firm in its binding.
First edition, early issue, bound without adverts in the red morocco cloth, and 7 of the 8 'internal flaws' called for by Smith. According to Smith, 'The plates were not duplicated and consequently most copies have poor impressions because of the large printings made from the one set of plates.' The plates in our copy are relatively good, also suggesting early impressions in the print run. A nice copy of one of the scarcest Dickens titles in cloth.
Smith 13.
