HUME, David. Le Génie de M. Hume, ou analyse de ses ouvrages, dans laquelle on pourra prendre une idée exacte des mœurs, des usages, des loix, et du gouvernement du peuple Anglois. “Londres & se trouve à Paris, Chez Vincent” [printed at Paris], 1770.
12mo (164 × 91 mm), pp. viii, 472. Woodcut and typographical ornaments. Contemporary mottled calf, spine with 5 raised bands, gilt in compartments, red morocco label, red edges. An excellent copy, crisp and fresh.
First and only edition, apparently the last of numerous French translations of Hume’s works to be published in his lifetime. It contains excerpts from his Essays (arranged thematically) and History of England (arranged chronologically). It was evidently aimed at a wider audience than the philosophical and appears as much a guide to the peculiarities of the British as to Hume’s philosophy.
