8vo, pp. [349], [3] (blank). Text in Hindi. Original vertically grained black cloth, with printed paper spine label. Upper joint just splitting at head but sound. Old German paper shelf label to spine, small inscription to head of preliminary blank. A very good copy.

First edition in Hindi, probably translated from the English version of Barth’s Christliche Kirchengeschichte, a fundamental text for the protestant mission in India. The work was also translated into Oriya and Singhalese. Barth was a major figure in the production of texts for the Lutheran missions outside Europe. John Parsons, the Hindi translator, lived for a long time at Monhir, dying there 1869. He is best remembered as a translator of the New Testament into Hindi.
