LETTSOM, John Coakley.
8vo (205 × 130 mm.), pp. xix (includes half-title), [i], 183, [1]. Quite spotted with some dustaining to leaves at front and rear. Contemporary blue paper wrappers, old cloth spine with paper label lettered in manuscript. Early twentieth-century bookseller’s label to front pastedown. A reasonable copy.
First edition in French, bearing an obviously false “Londres” imprint, of History of the origin of medicine (London, 1778). Lettsom, the physician and Quaker philanthropist was a prolific author on medical subjects and his name is especially associated with the foundation of the Medical Society of London (as a Quaker, he was excluded from the Royal College of Physicians).
Wellcome III, 508; Blake 268. ESTC lists 4 copies only: University of Leeds; Duke University, Medical Center; National Library of Medicine; University of Toronto. There is also a copy at Wellcome.
