ROBINSON, Nicholas. A new theory of physick and diseases, founded on the principles of the Newtonian philosophy. By Nicholas Robinson, M.D... London: for C. Rivington, J. Lacy and J. Clark, 1725.
8vo (195 × 112 mm.), pp. [ii], xiv, 328, [16]. Title within double-ruled borders. Light waterstain to foot of first dozen leaves, otherwise clean and crisp. Recent quarter calf, to style. A very good copy.
First edition. Robinson was born in Wales but gained his MD at Reims in 1718. He was also a protegé of Richard Mead to whom the present work is dedicated. Much of the work is practical (it includes several medical recipes at the end) but the theory is based on the “Newtonian” premise: “Is not the mechanism of the body conducted by the same laws that support the motions of the greater orbs of the universe?”
