WALLIS, Thomas. ~ The farrier’s and horseman’s complete dictionary: containing the art of farriery in all its branches; With whatever relates to the Manage, and to the Knowledge, Breeding, Feeding, and Dieting of Horses; as delivered by the best writers upon these subjects.... London: for J. Beecroft, J. and F. Rivington, W. Owen, T. Lowndes, G. Robinson; and T. Baker, at Southampton, 1775.
First published in 1759 with a second edition in 1764, a Dublin edition in 1766 prior to this ‘third’ edition, Wallis’s Dictionary was influential.
A search of the Oxford English Dictionary finds 15 citations for words defined by Wallis (including acopon, brainlet, paralytic, rheumatic and withers). Wallis describes himself as ‘surgeon’ on the title-page of each edition and the Dictionary is an important source for the history of equine medicine.
