(LENCLOS, Ninon de). ~ Letters of Ninon de Lenclos to the Marquiss de Sévigné. Translated from the French. London: Printed for D. Wilson, 1751.
8vo (163 × 97 mm), pp. xii, 273, . Quite heavily spotted throughout. Contemporary dark calf, sides with double ruled gilt borders, spine with five raised bands, unlettered. Rear free endpaper torn with loss to the upper upper joint repaired. Early shelf marks and an amateur portrait of Ninon to front pastedown.
First edition in English of the amorous letters, attributed to the famous courtesan (1620-1705), but actually by Louis Damours or Claude Prosper Jolyot de Crébillon. The letters, first published in French the previous year, are based on Ninon’s actual seduction of a young Marquis, but are presented as a series of lessons in the art of love from the older and experienced woman. An early reader has drawn a small cartouche portrait on the front pastedown.
