(JUVENILE). ~ [M. et Mme. Croquemitaine]. [France, c. 1830-40s].
Small 8vo concertina (120 × 70 mm) of 20 hand-coloured wood engraved panels. Original pale blue decorative boards with further coloured illustration to the upper cover and a letterpress alphabet to inside rear cover. Old inkstamp to one blank verso. A little rubbed, spine mostly absent, but sound.
We have been unable to find any other example of this particularly gruesome moral picture book. Monsieur and madame Croquemitaine stalk its pages punishing, beating and maiming young children for minor misdemeanours (lying, chatting, answering back, disobedience etc). The style is typically provincial.
